Old Airplane
What is the best way to take my child of eight months in a plane for the first time?
He is 8 months old and be riding in my lap with me. Anyone have any suggestions or tips that can make this journey easy for us. He did not breastfeed and we will be in the air for about 4 hours a stop in the middle.
I've been flying internationally with my children since they were 2 months (now 7 and 5), and here are some tips and advice always have worked for me and I hope that will help you: 1.) You need to have the baby all your documents in order. If you are traveling within the country is usually not necessary identification, but it's always good to have a notarized copy of your birth certificate with you. Verify what travel documents in advance to ensure that has everything. FAA regulations currently allow children under two to fly free as "lap children" (No need to have their own seat). The waiter / waitress should be placed in a front seat, where they will have more space. Most airlines will provide a seat Baby special strap that hooks to you so that your child may be the seat belt too. And depending on the airline and flight duration, the waiter / Waitress can give you a crib type thing that connects to the front wall to put your child in (however this can not be used during takeoff and landing). This is not is the surest way for a child to fly and the airlines recommend children have their own seat with a safety device for children but not mandate it because of the cost to parents. . 2) I advise using a CRS (Child Restraint System) because it is safe for children – especially during the turbulence, makes them feel secure, is more convenient for parents and children, and gives both a chance to relax a little. The SRC is an alternative approved by the airline use of a hard-backed seat and is approved for use in aircraft and for use in motor vehicles. Many people confuse it with a regular seat, which is not. This http://faa.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/faa.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=29&p_created=1071174367&p_sid=mn66D6wi&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9NCZwX3Byb2RzPSZwX2NhdHM9MCZwX3B2PSZwX2N2PSZwX3BhZ2U9MSZwX3NlYXJjaF90ZXh0PWNoaWxk&p_li=&p_topview=1 website talks about approved CRS devices and their ratings: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/CPS/CSSRating/Index.cfm Many airlines offer tickets at half price so that parents can ensure that your child can travel in a CRS device. Parents should call their airline to ask for a discount and / or ask for is the airline's policy is for using empty seats. Ask your airline if you can provide a CRS for your child. If so, you can not afford to bring your own CRS on board, and may have to do as baggage. http://www.faa.gov/passengers/fly_children/crs/ 3.) For takeoffs and landings the best you can do to help with the ear popping, is give your child a bottle of drink (milk, water, juice – it does not matter) or a pacifier. Baby formula is well taken, and not limited to the amount you can bring aboard (as long as your child is with you), do not worry. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/children/formula.shtm New regulations allow you to take beverages (including water) from home, provided they have less than 3 oz,-OR-beverages (including water) of any size that you have purchased from inside the security area in the aircraft. You can also bring a limited amount of baby food on the plane with you. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm # 10 Save your money when it comes to buying water, because although delegates / stewardess' will provide warm or cold water (or any other drink) free at any time you request, no matter how many times you request it. Another trick is that if your child is not taking to the pacifier or wanting to nurse or drink, rub gently on the neck from the chin to the chest several times – this will cause a swallowing motion which will help the ears pop. 4.) Pack some instant hot / cold cereals, instant rice, and other packages just add water (age appropriate of course). Monitors / stewardess' will provide hot or cold water upon request. You can also bring a limited amount of baby food and some other non-perishable snack items such as Cheerios. Drinks will be provided free at any time you request, no matter how many times you request. 5.) Be sure to pack a lot of things entertain your child. Some of his favorite toys, books, and any comfort things such as a blanket. It is also a good idea to buy some inexpensive toys that are given to him once on the plane. Hepatitis is to keep you busy. 6.) Be sure to pack 2-3 changes of clothes for your child. You need this in case he gets sick, spills something in itself, or in case your luggage gets lost. 7.) Keep your diaper bag well stocked with plenty of diapers, wipes, creams and other essentials. baby nail clippers and scissors are not allowed however. Just remember that regulate the new liquids, gels, and such and pack accordingly. Usually found travel baby products in stores in size and are wonderful for plane use. 8.) Keep your doctors name and number with you. Also called and number of a doctor you are visiting in case an emergency should arise. It is also a good idea to have a checkup with your doctor before departure to ensure your child is healthy enough to fly. If he has even a mild cold, pressure in ears during takeoff and landing (even if it makes precaution methods) could leave your ears sore for several days after the flight. Most doctors recommend that if someone is sick (Such as stuffy or already has an earache), not to take the flight because of the possibility of hearing damage. I know my husband and other pilots do not work if sick because of this danger. 9.) Bring any medications you may need for your child if you get sick or you take regularly. Remember that failure to prescription drugs, the rule applies to 3 oz and they should be kept in a plastic bag. Do NOT give your child medicine with the hope that doing to sleep. This is not only cruel, but dangerous. 10.) Last but not least, if help is offered to you, it's taken. Hope you have a great trip, and if I can be any more help, please do not hesitate to contact me
