Do you need advice on restoration of longcase clock?
I have an old box of a longcase clock (no clock inside) I want to start My refinishing the cabinet and then over time the parts of the clock. Any idea how to do that. I think part of one side has to be completely redone. Thanks in advance!
This is what I would do, assuming that the clock is not a valuable antique (If so, then you have an expert to restore, since much of the value is in the final): 1. If the finish is a varnish, poly (generally something found on the surface of the wood), pull the entire piece to remove finish. 2. Wash the piece with denatured alcohol and mineral water to remove dirt and oils in the pores of the wood. 3. Sand the entire piece with 150 and 220 paper. Dust sanding with a tack cloth. 4. Stain the piece the color you want. I prefer water-based dye stains, but the oil stains are fine DIY well. Use what you are comfortable working with. Aim for a nice uniform color. 5. Seal the stain with a lava layer of shellac (dilute material in the store DIY with denatured alcohol, 5 parts alcohol to 1 part shellac store bought). 6. Sand the piece again, just enough to remove lint. 220 320 or on paper. Remove dust 7. Finish with the material of your choice. I like both oil-based varnish oil or Danish (followed by paste wax), but use what is comfortable. Follow the manufacturer's instructions, including light sanding between coats as appropriate. After the case painting, install new internal components clock.
